The name reflects the legend that an angel revealed its special virtues to a monk during a time of plague. It was believed that if a piece of the root was held in the mouth it would not cure but protect against the plague. In England dried angelica roots were made into powder and mixed into wine to ‘abate the rage of lust in young persons’, whilst in Germany it was known as the root of the holy ghost and was believed to eliminate the effects of intoxication as well as rendering witchcraft and the evil eye harmless. Glossy dark red stems hold huge purple exotic looking pods which split to release large clusters of rich purple aromatic flowers during the summer. Good for cutting, attractive to bees, butterflies and birds. Prefers moist soil in sun or part shade. Height 150cm (60”) spread 60cm (24”). Hardy perennial. Can be short lived, remove flower heads before seeding to extend life of the plant.
