Araucaria araucana Monkey Puzzle Tree

The common name was possibly gained because the sharp branches, clothed with spiny leaves, proved such a trial to climb, it would even puzzle a monkey.
Thick leaves look almost scale-like as they cover the branches, helping to give the nickname of 'living fossile', also maybe because the species is so old and each individual tree will live for around 250 years.
Prefers moist well drained soil in sun or part shade. Slow growing, height 20m (66'), spread 8m (26') after 50 years. Fully hardy perennial. Supplied three years old in 2 litre pot.

Additional Information

Araucaria araucana commonly called the monkey puzzle tree, is an evergreen tree growing to 40 m tall. The tree is native to central and southern Chile and western Argentina. Araucaria araucana is the hardiest species in the conifer genus and because of the great age of this species, it is sometimes described as a living fossil. Its conservation status was changed to Endangered 2013. The leaves are thick, tough, and scale-like, triangular, with the male and female cones on separate trees, though occasional individuals bear cones of both sexes. The cones disintegrate at maturity to release the 3-4 cm long nut-like seeds.

Plant Hardiness

How hardy are our plants?

All our plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

Fully hardy perennials will withstand temperatures down to -15 °C (5°F) and often lower.
Hardy perennials are happy down to at least -5°C (23°F)
Half hardy perennials can withstand down to around 0°C (32°F)
And Tender perennials may be damaged by temperatures below 5°C (41°F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
If in doubt please give us a call.

Praise also, for the Bulrush Compost, of which I have purchased 8 bags during the past six months. It is superb and my garden has flourished.
Bless you,
Kind wishes"
