Clematis viticella Mary Rose

An extremely old cultivar, lost for several hundred years before being rediscovered in the 1980's and renamed after Henry VIII's warship which sunk in the 1500's. Full double smoky purple blooms smother the foliage, nodding in the summer breeze from July to September. Prefers well-drained soil in sun or part shade with feet in shade, loves coastal areas. Height 3.9m (13'). Fully hardy perennial. Supplied in 7cm pots from May onwards.

Additional Information

Propagate in early summer by soft wood or semi ripe cuttings, or by layering. Prune before new growth begins, in early spring. Cut back all the previous seasons stems to a pair of strong buds, 15-20cm (6-8") above soil level. Hardy perennial.

Fully hardy perennials will withstand temperatures down to -15 °C (5°F) and often lower.
Hardy perennials are happy down to at least -5°C (23°F)
Half hardy perennials can withstand down to around 0°C (32°F)
And Tender perennials may be damaged by temperatures below 5°C (41°F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
