One of Harriet's all time favourites! Not edible, but the chocolate fragrance is mouth-watering! Solitary, cup-shaped deep rich burgundy velvet flowers appear in June until October and gently weave their long stalks through surrounding plants.
Often thought of to be difficult to keep over winter, Harriet has found the best solution is to grow in a pot, buried in the ground during summer so it is part of your border. The in autumn lift the whole pot and store undisturbed at the back of a shed to keep the whole thing (inlcuding the tuber) dry. When brought out again in the spring, and given water and warmth, new shoots will start to appear around end of May.
Prefers well drained soil in sun or part shade. Height 60cm (24”). Spread 45cm (18”). Tuberous perennial.
