Also known as Montbretia, and first cultivated in Britain in the early 19th century, they originated in the grasslands of South Africa and were named from the Greek ‘Krokos’ (saffron) and ‘osme’ (smell) as the leaves smell of saffron when rubbed. The fiery tomato red blooms will heat up the garden from late summer. Trouble free, easy to grow, rabbit resistant and good for cutting. Prefers moist soil in sun or partial shade. Height 100cm (40”). Spread 10cm (4”) although this increases over the years, they are not invasive and any unwanted clumps can easily be lifted after a period of time if required. Hardy perennial.
