Dryopteris (fern) Erythrosora

In our opinion, the best garden fern with striking, triangular, colour changing fronds that are sure to brighten any shady spot.

New fronds emerge a rich pinky-red, intriguingly changing colour through bronze, yellow-green to green with an occasional red tinge. Like most ferns it loves damp shade, but this beauty does incredibly well in pots on a shady patio. Evergreen in a mild winter. Prefers moist soil in full or part shade. Height & spread 45-60cm (18-24”). Fully hardy perennial. Supplied in 9cm pots.

Additional Information

Dryopteris are a low maintenance plant if positioned in the appropriate area. They are moisture attentive plants and should be watered on a regular basis, especially during periods of dry weather. A layer of mulch is recommended in the autumn which will help to conserve moisture levels. It is recommended to cut back any decayed fronds during the winter to encourage new growth.

Plant Hardiness

How hardy are our plants?

All our plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

Fully hardy perennials will withstand temperatures down to -15 °C (5°F) and often lower.
Hardy perennials are happy down to at least -5°C (23°F)
Half hardy perennials can withstand down to around 0°C (32°F)
And Tender perennials may be damaged by temperatures below 5°C (41°F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
If in doubt please give us a call.

"Thank you ladies for your beautiful plants.
Praise also, for the Bulrush Compost, of which I have purchased 8 bags during the past six months. It is superb and my garden has flourished.
Bless you,
Kind wishes"
