Elsholtzia stauntonii (Mint Bush)

Extending the season with its illuminous spikes of lilac, pink and mauve, which radiate through the autumn garden, the mint shrub awakens in September and October. At a time when colour is scarce, it's an invaluable addition. Placed in a sunny mixed border in moist but free-draining soils, this handsome sub-shrub is striking enough to demand a prime garden position. Plant where its aromatic, deciduous, mint-scented leaves can be enjoyed. Prune frame to half its height in May to encourage branching and pinch out the growing tips to stimulate flowering.

Additional Information

The plant is often chosen for its slender tubular purple flowers which appear in late autumn and early winter above mint scented aromatic foliage. It is low maintenance in a sunny well drained site, only requiring a prune back to a low permanent framework when the buds are starting the swell in spring. One of a few shrubs to flower this late in the year it extends the interest in the garden and dies back like a herbaceous perennial after showing excellent foliage colour once frosts commence.

How hardy are our plants?

All our plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

Fully hardy perennials will withstand temperatures down to -15 °C (5°F) and often lower.
Hardy perennials are happy down to at least -5°C (23°F)
Half hardy perennials can withstand down to around 0°C (32°F)
And Tender perennials may be damaged by temperatures below 5°C (41°F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
If in doubt please give us a call.

"Thank you ladies for your beautiful plants.
Praise also, for the Bulrush Compost, of which I have purchased 8 bags during the past six months. It is superb and my garden has flourished.
Bless you,
Kind wishes"
