The French botanist Monsieur de Monbret gave these plants their original name of Monbretia, the actual name is Crocosmia which derives form the Greek krokos , meaning saffron , and osme meaning smell as the sword shaped foliage smells of saffron when the leaves are rubbed together. Although the plants are hardy they bring a tropical vibrancy to the English garden with their electrifying hues of Red, Orange and Yellow. The bulbs increase freely to produce swathes of colour with flowers that cut well. Easy to grow, preferring well drained soil in full sun or partial shade.
Height 90-110cm (36-44"). Spread 10cm (4") although this increases over the years. They are not invasive and any unwanted clumps can easily be lifted after a period of time if required.
