Helleborus (Hellebore) Double Ellen Collection

History of the Hellebore:

Helleborus are often better known as the 'Christmas' or 'Lenten' Rose as they flower profusely whilst other blooms slumber. Subject to their common name, Helleborus are in fact part of the Buttercup family.

During ancient times, Hellebore's were vital to form medicines that would aid in the cure of ailments such as gout, paralysis and insanity.

However, it was found that these plants are highly poisonous and if ingested in large volumes, would cause some quite nasty symptoms such as vertigo and would often lead to swelling of the tongue and throat.

Planting Guide:

Helleborus are the ideal plants for shade and will thrive if kept in a sheltered area of the garden. Plant in soil that is well-draining, ensuring that it is watered thoroughly and kept moist throughout the growing season. Mulch with leaf mould to retain moisture levels and increase soil fertility.

Plant Hardiness

How hardy are our plants?

All our plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

Fully hardy perennials will withstand temperatures down to -15 °C (5°F) and often lower.
Hardy perennials are happy down to at least -5°C (23°F)
Half hardy perennials can withstand down to around 0°C (32°F)
And Tender perennials may be damaged by temperatures below 5°C (41°F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.

Praise also, for the Bulrush Compost, of which I have purchased 8 bags during the past six months. It is superb and my garden has flourished.
Bless you,
Kind wishes"
