Pennisetum setaceum Rubrum (Purple Fountain Grass)

An amazing new grass with rich burgundy red foliage and beautifully arching spikes of red feathery flowers during late summer providing often much needed texture and movement amongst perennials. Extremely drought tolerant and unfortunately tender but great for container, over winter in a frost free area.

Prefers well-drained soil in sun or partial shade.  Height 90cm (36”).  Spread 30-45cm (12-18”).  Tender perennial.

Additional Information

Ensure you do not over water your plants, especially whilst they are young. Once Pennisetum are mature, they are generally drought tolerant although you will need to supply additional water during sustained periods of dry weather. Cut your plants back at the end of winter and move to a suitable place where it will not be damaged by cold weather. Propagate by division in late spring or early summer. Half Hardy Perennial.

How hardy are our plants?

All our plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

Fully hardy perennials will withstand temperatures down to -15 °C (5°F) and often lower.
Hardy perennials are happy down to at least -5°C (23°F)
Half hardy perennials can withstand down to around 0°C (32°F)
And Tender perennials may be damaged by temperatures below 5°C (41°F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
