Trachycarpus fortunei

Also known as the Windmill Palm, this best selling plant is described as one of the hardiest palms and perfect for the UK climate.

Looking fabulous in a pot, the stunning fan-shaped leaves bring a touch of the tropical to your garden. In summer, branched flower heads displaying inconspicuous green flowers are seen to add to their charm.

Growing about 30cm (12") a year, it remains manageable, growing almost anywhere. Prefers moist, well-drained soil in good sun out of harsh winds.

Prefers a sheltered spot away from strong or cold drying winds.Trachycarpus should be fed well throughout active growth. Use a palm fertiliser combined with a general fertiliser, taking care not to spill any on the foliage as this will damage your palm. Apply a generous layer of mulch in the form of wood chippings or grass cuttings around the base of your Trachycarpus to encourage healthy growth and development. Generally, you will need to water your palm thoroughly and regularly, ensuring the soil is draining efficiently. No pruning required and if in a happy spot will grow up to 30cm a year. Hardy perennial.

How hardy are our plants?

All our plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

Fully hardy perennials will withstand temperatures down to -15 °C (5°F) and often lower.
Hardy perennials are happy down to at least -5°C (23°F)
Half hardy perennials can withstand down to around 0°C (32°F)
And Tender perennials may be damaged by temperatures below 5°C (41°F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
