A favourite of the Victorians, grown for its long flowering season from April to November/December.
Tucked in the midst of Cornwall, breeder Steve Yoxall has been patiently nurturing a range of large flowered hardy abutilon. We were lucky enough to visit him and obtain some of the first plants to grow here in the midlands. Beautiful, nodding, papery almost unreal, lantern shaped flowers are suspended upon arching stems from late spring through to first frosts over maple like foliage. Happy in containers and borders. Prefers well drained soil in sun. Height & spread 90cm (36“). Hardy perennial to -5oC and probably lower.
Hardy 'millerii' has beautifully marked yellow and green evergreen foliage. The long wiry stems are perfect for training up a wall or trellis and drip all summer and autumn with orange blooms, hanging like bells with dark ‘clappers’. The flowers of 'milleri'can apparently be used in salads, cooked or raw though we have never tried it.
