Collection Sanguisorba obtusa Alba & Astilbe arendsii Fanal

The Latin name sanguis (blood) and sorbeo (to soak up) describes the medicinal use of this plant in the past. Fluffy white catkin like blooms sway in the breeze on arching stems in summer. Being rhizomatous, an attractive clump is formed. Prefers moist well drained soil in sun or part shade. Height & spread 60cm (24”). Hardy perennial.

In ancient Greek, Astilbe means without brilliance but Fanal, being the darkest red of all Astilbe’s will dazzle a shady area. Deep blood red fluffy plumes up to 30cm (12”) long appear in summer above dark green foliage. Excellent for cutting and drying as the stems are so strong and the flowers hold their colour for several weeks. Deer and rabbit resistant. Great for a bog garden, preferring moist soil in full or part shade. Height 60cm (24”). Spread 45cm (18”). Hardy perennial.
