Paeonias are amongst the most beautiful of all flowering plants.
In 1948 a Japanese nurseryman, Toichi Itoh, succeeded in crossing a hybrid tree peony with a herbaceous peony. He unfortunately passed away before any had flowered.
All may have been lost but for an American horticulturist who obtained permission from Itoh’s widow to patent four of the plants in the 1960’s. These plants caused a terrific stir!
Itoh hybrid plants look much like a Tree Peony, with a domed shape but become dormant much like an herbaceous Peony will do, dying back in autumn and reappearing in early spring. They begin flowering in the first or second year in your garden and will continue for decades. Peonies are the longest-lived perennials of all, a lifetime investment in the beauty of your landscape.
Callies Memory is truly beautiful with pale pink petals and darker red centre and once established each plant can produce up to 50 blooms in one season. Great fragrance, requires no staking! The handsome foliage stays until frosts. Good for cutting. Height 60cm (24”). Hardy perennial. Delivery March/April and November 2008.
These new Itoh paeonia are typically extremely expensive. However, we have been able to bring down the price for Hayloft customers by working with a grower who loves these plants so much he is worried about the usual market price making these plants inaccessable to the normal gardener.
