HAYLOFT PLANTS BUSINESS IS GROWING!

Gardens are havens of peace, happiness and tranquillity, even a short visit will lift your spirits. We feel blessed to be able to work with our great love, plants. We believe the secret to our success is our ability to embrace modern technology whilst retaining the good old-fashioned values of life. Quality is important to us, and we like to treat our customers as we would like to be treated ourselves. Gardening is all about having fun. Thanks to you, it’s not only our business that is growing … our team is too! – Now Yvonne, Harriet, Evie, Alison, Clair and baby Hannah.

The 2009 Hayloft Plants catalogue is just published and contains a fantastic selection of new and unusual hardy garden perennials, many exclusive to Hayloft Plants. Herbaceous Border Phlox has been a mainstay of the scented cottage garden for many years and is sold in large numbers. We have, on an exclusive worldwide basis, the first double rosebud Phlox Tiara – a highly scented double white making superb cut flowers for the home (page 12). Hippeastrum Sonatini Helios (page 44) is the very first hardy Hippeastrum for the garden with a bulb producing two stems, each crowned by three to four elegant trumpet shaped blooms. In addition to Helios, Hayloft Plants have secured, on a worldwide exclusive basis, Hippeastrum Sonatini Balentino (page 22) and Hippeastrum Sonatini Red Rascal (page 22). Stocks are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Hardy Hibiscus were first available in 2008, another break through in plant breeding. On page 32 you will see Hardy Hibiscus Copper King – each flower is the size of a dinner plate, but what makes this so special is the lush maple like hardy copper red foliage. Hardy Geraniums make gardening so easy, great for borders and containers, flowering all summer long and keeping the weeds at bay. 2009 sees the introduction of several new outstanding varieties – Geranium plenum Double Jewel (Page 5) – double diamond white star flowers splashed with pink and purple in the centre and Geranium phaeum Raven – named because of the very dark blue-purple almost black blooms reminiscent of the bird’s feathers that smother the foliage.

Dahlia in the language of flowers means dignity and elegance. Dahlia Tartan (page 12) gives both these features when you consider the huge dinner plate flowers appearing on strong stems in the summer – another new and exclusive variety from Hayloft Plants. Look on the back page and you will see our favourite new plant for 2009 – Dahlia Karma Choc – They say the way to a girl’s heart is to give chocolate, doesn’t it look good enough to eat?

We love Penstemons and our new and exclusive Ice Cream Vanilla (page 16) has to be one plant to purchase with the huge blooms, twice the size of the old fashioned varieties, flowering continuously from June to November each year. More new varieties will follow for release later in the year. Salvia greggii Navajo Dark Purple (page 21) has a profusion of curious open mouthed deep indigo flowers smothering the neat compact blackberry scented foliage. Salvia Semiatrata, on the same page, has fascinating blooms with the top lid deep blue and the lower lip lavender tinged white.

Have a look on page 23 and you will find Gaillardia Red Kiwi, the warmest red Gaillardia flowers you will ever see and a plant breeding first as there is no yellow in the flower. This has taken a long time to achieve but was well worth the wait in our opinion. Back to the blues! Have a look at Diascia Denim Blue on page 27. Have you ever seen a blue Diascia? Well we hadn’t until this beauty appeared. Great garden performance is guaranteed from Diascia for both hanging baskets and containers and did you realise it is hardy down to minus 8 degrees C.

Amarcrinum howardii(page 31) is so rare and hard to find with the sweet scented pink funnel shaped blooms held on stout stems with an amazing ten to fifteen flowers per stem. Have you ever seen a white Phygelius? You have now on page 36 with Phygelius x rectus Ivory TwistCrinum x powellii Album (page 43) has a most amazing scent as does the Spanish Lavender stoechas Mulberry Ruffles on page 42. Harriet puts the ‘Hot Stuff’ page together and she just loves Echinacea Hot Papaya (page 48). A brand new fiery double orange bombshell with scent and doesn’t fade with age, what is she on?

There is so much to say and so little space to say it. Keep watching for the Hayloft catalogues and keep an eye on the Hayloft website www.hayloftplants.co.uk as some of the very limited very new and unusual items appear here first.
