Our plants are supplied either as young plants, potted plants, bare rooted plants or bulbs and corms, as stated in each plant description.
Young plants are grown in the ideal plug size to provide the best conditions required during the first stage of each plant’s development. Usually measuring approximately 8-15cm (3-6”) from root base to stem tip, although they are often larger. In ideal conditions they may be planted directly into the ground, however, we recommend they are potted on for 3-4 weeks to develop strong root growth prior to planting out.
Looking at the picture on the left, Evie is holding a Penstemon young plant and a pot containing a penstemon that was potted on 6/8 weeks previously as a young plant.

Potted plants(5cm, 7cm & 9cm) as in the picture on the right, are the next stage of development, for those of you who like instant gardening. These can be either planted straight out soon after arrival or grown on a little longer in pots, whichever you prefer.
Bare root plants as in the picture on the left, are not always pretty on arrival but they are at least one year old and have been harvested from the field whilst dormant during the winter. We store them at optimum conditions until you are ready to receive them. Plant out on arrival and once the sunshine warms them they will continue to grow and bloom as if they have never been disturbed. As they are mature plants, please order early to avoid disappointment. Bulbs and Corms come in various sizes, this is not directly relevant to the eventual size of the plant. You do not have to worry about planting immediately on arrival as they will store well in a cool dry place for a couple of weeks. They are so easy as the flowers are already nestling in the centre, if you ever cut one open you can see them! Although this would of course mean you cannot use the bulb afterwards.
Delivery All orders will be confirmed by post, giving an approximate delivery date. Please be understanding around the expected time of delivery as inclement weather can alter things slightly. Rest assured, we would always contact you if the delay were more than 15 days.
Royal Mail will deliver your plants in sturdy packaging, along with plant identification labels and cultural notes giving advice on the care of your plants. We can also deliver to an alternative address and if necessary delay delivery to avoid inconvenient dates.
AGM denotes the Royal Horticultural Society’s special Award of Garden Merit for plants they consider to offer an outstanding performance in the garden. As in the picture opposite, Aquilegia Nora Barlow AGM planted with Allium giganteum Globemaster AGM.
Alternatives… On occasion it may be necessary to send alternative varieties within a collection. We do not take the decision lightly and always try to provide a plant of equal or greater interest and cost. Please indicate when ordering if this is unacceptable.
