Saponaria officinalis (Scented) Rosea Plena

With a scent four times stronger than the scent of a rose (according to Colorado University), and delicate pink flowers in 3” panicles all summer through to autumn this Saponaria has become one of our most popular plants as the flowers fill your garden and your home with fragrance.

Saponins within this plant have long been valued as a cleanser for all manner of things from skin to metals, hence the common name ‘Bouncingbet’, as this was an old fashioned name for a washer woman. In fact, a lather can be produced if you rub the leaves between your hands. Though considered toxic the Dutch used it to give a better head to beer and saponins are still used for that purpose today.
